“Guess what! I found the next clue!”
The familiar voice was a welcome sound. Enid swiveled her office chair away from the computer so she could face Reece. No matter how many times she saw him, her heart always seemed to jump as soon as she caught a glimpse of his handsome face. Today, as he victoriously held up a piece of white paper, the smile that engulfed his face made him even more attractive than usual.
“Isn’t that great?” he prodded.
She could tell from his rushed speech that Reece was too excited to bother with pleasantries. She didn’t mind. Seeing such ebullience in a grown man was refreshing. Perhaps Agnes saw this boyish quality in Reece, and she knew a puzzle would be just the way to bring those emotions and gestures to the surface. No matter what Agnes had been thinking, Enid was glad that Agnes had made the best of the idea.
“Congratulations! So what was the evil box?”
“You’ll never guess.” He shook his head. “The television.”
“The television? You’ve got to be kidding.”
“Nope.” He headed for the extra chair and then took a seat. “I went over to her house today between dropping Connie off and going to work. Just as I suspected, the clue was taped to the back of the television set.”
“So how did you figure it out?”
“I didn’t, really. Well, I sort of did. But Connie helped me.” Reece related how his discussion with Connie during dinner had led him to put together the clues to solve the puzzle.
“Oh, I see. That makes perfect sense once you explain it,” Enid observed.
“Aunt Agnes would probably be surprised it took me so long to figure it out. She knew how I try to keep Connie from watching too much TV.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself. I didn’t figure it out right away either.” She rose from her seat. “Why don’t you let me pour you a cup of coffee while you read me the next clue?”
“Sounds like a win/win proposal to me. The best one I’ve gotten all day.”
“Just all day, huh?”
“Considering that I’m the one who’s supposed to be making proposals. . .”
Enid’s heart lurched at the insinuation. But, of course, Reece didn’t mean a marriage proposal. “Indeed?” Enid launched into her most upper-crust Victorian accent. “My good gentleman, I beg your pardon. I shall not be so forward in the future. Mama would be extremely vexed to learn I haven’t acted like a proper lady should. My confidence is safe with you, I hope?”
“Indeed,” he mimicked in an equally affected accent. “As a matter of fact, I find your forwardness quite charming. I would go so far as to say enchanting.”
As Enid’s eyes met his, she forgot she was supposed to be handing him the cup of coffee. Instead, she froze, not wanting the moment to end. Reece returned her expression, studying her eyes with concentration. His face tilted closer, as though he wanted to kiss her. Suddenly, seeming to think better of it, he stopped short, returning his attention to the coffee.
